Coming up with an idea for a project is always hard for me. I tend to have so many disparate ideas that its hard to combine them all into one comprehensive piece. So instead for this project, I decided to start with something simple that I've always wanted to do with a camera- film underwater.
Water has always intrigued me ever since I was a child. I've been amazed by it yet incredibly intimidated by it at the same time. It is a powerful force that represents birth, peace, strength and a sort of return to the essentials, the primordial.
Water is:
Transformation
Subconscious
Fertilization
Purification
Reflection
Intuition
Renewal
Blessing
Motion
Life
I want to expand on these meanings in my project and emphasize the healing powers of nature. Having spent the past three months in an environment without phones, computer, televisions, I realized just how calming the outdoors can be.
I plan to film (myself if possible) entering a body of water feet first and then slow down the footage a great deal. While I get deeper and deeper into the water I want to splice these silent scenes with hectic footage of me running, preferably through some sort of man-made landscape- city, concrete, etc.
Obviously I'll experiement a lot with different scenes once I'm able to get the underwater case for the flip cam but this is my basic idea thus far. I'm trying to convey a feeling that I'm sure everybody has had at some point- a stressed, overwhelmed feeling and frustration with modern society and way of life and juxtapose that with something more peaceful.
sounds really good! think about if you want to flesh this out over the course of the semester, or if this is just one project among many of varying subjects.
